Introduction
Audio formats (EXOTIK+DA)
Introduction
The surround sound algorithms supplied with the EXOTIK+DA include:
The EXOTIK pre-amplifier has been designed to provide superb audio performance with
both two- and multi-channel source material. This product uses technology developed
for Linn’s award-winning flagship KLIMAX Kontrol pre-amplifier and offers purist audio
performance and access to and control of the new generation of multi-channel sound
formats.
Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital EX
Two variants of the product offer different levels of functionality to suit your
requirements:
DTS 96/24, DTS-ES
The standard EXOTIK is a multi-channel analogue unit supporting bass redirect, stereo
sub algorithm and 5.1 to 2 channel downmix.
Along with Linn’s proprietary LIMBIK algorithm.
Note:
A full list of the algorithms is detailed in the Surround sound formats section of the
Operation chapter (page 18).
EXOTIK+DA is an enhanced product which offers all the features of the standard EXOTIK
with the addition of a digital audio module for processing of all major audio algorithms,
including Dolby Digital 5.1, Pro Logic II, DTS Surround and DTS 96/24.*
The EXOTIK pre-amplifier exemplifies a commitment by Linn to new products which can
take advantage of the latest technology and audio formats whilst continuing to support
existing Linn customers with improved performance and superb value.
Cleaning
Disconnect the EXOTIK from the power supply before cleaning. Remove dust and
fingerprints with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using domestic cleaning products on the unit.
Important notes:
When the unit is in standby, either EXOTIK or EXOTIK+DA is shown on the front panel
display to indicate the product variant.
In this manual ‘EXOTIK’ refers to both the standard and the EXOTIK+DA versions of the
product. ‘Standard EXOTIK’ and ‘EXOTIK+DA’ refer specifically to the variants.
*The digital audio module is available as an upgrade for the standard EXOTIK.

Positioning
Connecting
You can locate your EXOTIK anywhere you find convenient (including in a 19” rack), but
there are a few simple points to note regarding positioning:
This chapter explains how to install the EXOTIK pre-amplifier into your hi-fi/AV system.
The IR sensor that receives the handset signals is quite sensitive, so the unit
Unpacking
The EXOTIK is supplied with the following accessories:
should be kept out of direct sunlight to avoid false operation. The IR beam from
the handset will pass through semi-opaque glass so operation behind, for example,
smoked-glass cabinet doors is possible.
luminescent handset with booklet
Never block the ventilation slots on the top and sides of the unit.
2 x R03 (AAA) batteries for the handset
The unit should be protected from anything that generates significant amounts of
1 pair of black interconnect cables
heat, such as radiators or power amplifiers.
RS232 lead (for connecting the EXOTIK to a Linn UNIDISK player to allow
Note regarding Plasma and LCD screens
communication between the two units)
Plasma and large LCD screens emit infra-red (IR) frequencies that can interfere
mains lead
with the IR remote operation of the EXOTIK if the emitted IR hits the product’s
display. Take care not to place the EXOTIK in a position where it faces the
Plasma / LCD screen or otherwise allows the emitted IR to shine directly on to it.
A position below or directly adjacent to the screen will normally avoid such
interference.
this manual
We recommend you retain the packaging for reuse in case you need to transport the unit
at any time.
Connecting to the mains supply
Manual voltage selection is not required as the EXOTIK operates from any mains AC
power. There are no user-replaceable fuses inside the unit. The mains lead supplied may
be fitted with a fused plug according to local regulations. If this is the case, always
replace this fuse with another of the same type and rating.
The EXOTIK must always be earthed when connected to the mains supply. Use
the earthed mains lead supplied. Never use an unearthed plug or adapter with
this unit.

Setup
The setup menus enable you to configure your EXOTIK for all sources it is connected to,
the loudspeakers in your system and much more. To take advantage of your EXOTIK’s
features, please take the time to configure your unit correctly.
Connecting
The first stage in setting up your EXOTIK is to connect your sources, power amp(s) and
other peripheral devices to the EXOTIK.
The setup menus are divided into five categories and are accessed via the MAIN MENU:
1. Ensure your EXOTIK and all components that you will be connecting to the EXOTIK
are disconnected from the mains supply.
SPEAKER SETUP
For configuring the unit for the number and size of the loudspeakers in your system and
for calibrating their volume level. (EXOTIK+DA: also for setting the distance of your
loudspeakers from your listening position.)
2. Connect your source components, power amp(s) and any communication/control
devices you wish to use, referring to the back panel diagram in the Connecting
chapter (page 3).
SOURCE SETUP
For configuring sources on the unit.
3. Connect the EXOTIK to the mains supply and turn the unit on using the switch on
the back panel. After a few seconds the front panel will display EXOTIK or
EXOTIK+DA depending on your unit.
AUDIO SETUP
For configuring the audio output of the unit.
4. Press the
key on the front panel or handset.
GENERAL SETUP
For adjusting the general setup of the unit.
The main stage in setup is configuring the EXOTIK pre-amplifier to suit your
requirements. This is achieved using the setup menus. How to configure the EXOTIK is
explained in the rest of this chapter.
UNIDISK SOURCE
For adjusting the input settings if you are using a Linn UNIDISK player with the EXOTIK.
There is also a UNIDISK SETUP item in the MAIN MENU for accessing the setup menus
on a Linn UNIDISK player if one is present (see Using the EXOTIK with a Linn UNIDISK
player, page 16).
Using the EXOTIK with a Linn UNIDISK player
For information on how to connect and set up your EXOTIK to a Linn UNIDISK player, see
page 16.
In addition, the EXOTIK features an INSTALLER MENU for saving the configuration of the
unit as set in the above menus and restoring the factory defaults. For full information
see Installer menu, page 15.

DOLBY PRO LOGIC II MUSIC (EXOTIK+DA)
Dolby Pro Logic II is an audio signal processing algorithm that converts a two-channel
audio signal to a five-channel audio signal.
Dolby Pro Logic II Music is a mode of Dolby Pro Logic II that is particularly suited to
music. It features three user-adjustable parameters that are accessed from this item.

is pressed, or
CENTRE WIDTH
This parameter allows adjustment of the audio signal between the centre
loudspeaker and front left and right loudspeakers.
If set to 0 (no spreading) all of the audio signal for the centre channel is sent to the
centre loudspeaker.
Range: 1/10 (slowest) to 10/10 (fastest)
Default setting: 6/10
If set to 3 (neutral) a portion of the centre channel signal is also sent to the left and
right front loudspeakers.
If set to 7 (Full Phantom) all of the centre channel signal is split evenly between the
front left and right loudspeakers.
